Project : Industrial Estate Planning
Location : East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh
Duration : March 2003 - March 2007
Implementing Partner/Agency (s) : Central Pollution Control Board Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation.

Target Group : Indian Industry
Goal
: Integration of Business and environment for creating economic opportunities and social relationships in a sustainable manner without causing any adverse impacts/risks on the environment.
Description

:

The siting of industrial estates in India today is haphazard and is not based on any prior environmental assessments. In addition, the industrial estates are generally not properly designed to provide proper layouts, environmental infrastructure etc. This has serious repercussions.

Under the Zoning Atlas programme, systematic industrial estate planning studies and environmental assessments were conducted for 15 sites in fifteen different states. The studies, conducted in continuation of the district level Zoning atlas studies were targeted for identifying sites through micro level detailed environmental assessments, where industrial estates can be developed in accordance with the local demands. Sites were identified for developing industrial estates.

Having identified the sites that support environmental considerations regarding businesses which are to use the site, now the important step is to ensure that the sites are properly designed and developed with the needed environmental infrastructure so as to qualify these estates as Eco-Industrial Parcs. The immediate step now is to take up pilot work for one of the industrial estates for designing the layouts and the infrastructure.

The chosen site in Kathipudi-Rajanagaram is considered a potential site for developing petrochemical and allied industries. The necessary upstream infrastructure including port facilities and a highway have already been developed to cater for the proposed site.

ASEM provides technical support through experts for designing the pilot industrial estate and training.

The main benefits of the project are :

• The site of the estate is properly selected incorporating economic and    environmental aspects and hence    reduced environmental risks.
• Implementation of cleaner production methods and waste    management facilities and hence reduction of    pollution.
• The potential industries coming up in the estate are assessed and    infrastructure is accordingly planned
• Decreased production costs through increased material and energy    efficiency, waste recycling and potential    to share further business    services.
