A gap analysis was carried out on the solid Bio-medical waste management system adopted in the hospital. Based on the baseline studies, HAWA made recommendations for improvement in waste management. Manipal Hospital then undertook the implementation of the action plan and finally achieved a system which is complying with the Bio-medical Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2000.
SOPs were then developed and are now routinely being used in the hospital for every activity that generated bio-medical waste. Specialized containers for sharp management, hazardous waste management was also developed and is being used. A special design of intermediate storage of solid bio-medical waste with color codes was also given by HAWA and built by Manipal. |
