Signing of a MoU between FICCI & GTZ
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on the 18March, 09 between Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) & German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). On behalf of FICCI Mr. Arun Chawla, (Senior Director, FICCI) and on behalf of GTZ Mr. G. Dresruesse (Country Director, GTZ) and Dr. J. Bischoff (Director, GTZ-ASEM) signed the MoU.

The intent of this MoU was to outline the way in which the two institutions will be able to utilize their complementary capabilities for offering a joint value proposition that would focus on effective development of world class human capital and leadership.

Within the framework of the MoU, a PPP was agreed upon in principle. The basic element of PPP between FICCI, GTZ and Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India is establishing court-annexed mediation centers in five districts in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal and in Delhi annexed to the State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (SCDRC). The consumer courts would refer suitable cases for mediation and alternate dispute resolution (ADR) to these mediation centers for speedier resolution of consumer complaints. The pilot project will be carried out in close consultation with the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).

Kick-off Workshop on "E - Waste Inventorisation in KMA, West Bengal"
German Technical Cooperation (GTZ)-Advisory Services in Environmental Management (ASEM) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), ICLEI-South Asia and United States - Department of State in partnership with National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) jointly organized one and half day international workshop on "Including Clean Technology and Efficiency Measures while Developing Infrastructure Projects for Improved Urban Environment" at Coimbatore on 13-14 March 2009. The workshop included:
  • Present the Assessment of the Urban Environment Accords supported by the GTZ India;
  • Inauguration of the Renewable Energy andEnergy Efficiency Resource Center for Coimbatore under the Local Renewable Model Communities Project;
  • Launch of Urban Climate Project: Building Clean and Efficient Cities funded under the Asia Pacific Partnership program by the US department of State;
  • Discussions & deliberations on energy status, Kyoto protocol, CDM and post 2012 climate negotiations under the Climate Roadmap project supported by British High Commission.
The urban environment accords (UEAs) look at implementing reforms/projects to achieve improvements at the city level in seven areas including energy, waste reduction, urban design, urban nature, transportation, environmental health and water. In 2008, GTZ-ASEM together with ASEM Vol. 1, Issue 1, 2009 ICLEI-South Asia had undertaken the first ever review of the status of UEA implementation covering all 16 Indian cities. GTZ-ASEM together with ICLEI-South Asia awarded three cities for their performance on environmental and sustainability issues under the Urban Environmental Accords (UEA) for Improved Urban Environment. The Municipal Corporation of Ahmedabad received the first prize, Hyderabad was second prize winner and Bhopal was the third winner among the top performing cities according to the review conducted last year as part of this program.


Jago Grahak Jago
The consumers in rural areas were made aware of consumer courts, precision of weights and measures and consumer redressal through "Jago Grahak Jago" campaign of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India on television, radio broadcasting and print media. The campaign was extensively advocated in the states of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat in regional, Hindi and English channels and published in more than 25 leading newspapers in each State.
